Botswana – Epitome of Democracy & Harmony

I just came across this article in the mail and guardian newspaper and I think its quiet interesting – I know its old and all but with Khama introducing these new social tax laws on booze I think it would be quite vital to revisit this story to understand the ideologies behind the man and how he assumed power. Reminds of an article I read about David Magang’s book – there is one line which reads thus: “Botswana has had three presidents from independence prior to Ian Khama – of all those three Mogae was the most eduacated but Seretse was the most learned!”

Quote “Botswana has been showered with praise and been repeatedly dubbed the “African miracle“. We, in contrast, suggest that the country’s democracy is elitist, power is centralized in the Presidency and there is growing autocracy in Botswana. The imminent handover of power by the current President, Festus Mogae, to the Vice-President, Ian Khama, is increasingly raising concern within Botswana itself.” End Quote

So says Kenneth Good – Mail & Guardian
